After a year long investigation, Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez has announced she will not press criminal charges against Chicago police officer Richard Fiorito. Fiorito is facing a civil suit involving more than 30 arrestees who claim they were falsely arrested. Fiorito remains on desk duty while the Internal Affairs investigation is still pending.
Officer Richard Fiorito, the Chicago police officer who is accused of faking DUI arrests, is in the news again as the number of lawsuits facing him nearly double and new dashboard videos are released. Fiorito's report claims the driver in the new video was swerving and barely missing parked cars. You have got to see this for yourself! How often does this happen?
Richard Fiorito, Chicago, IL police officer, is now on administrative leave pending an internal affairs investigation on the accusations he was making fake DUI arrests. Reportedly, Firoito will serve on desk duity until the investigation is complete.
Officer Richard Fiorito was awarded by the Illinois MADD organization for writing the most DUI tickets in a year, reportedly nearly 300 arrests each year. Now answering federal civil suit involving 22 arrestees, Fiorito is under criminal investigation as well. Following complaints about his conduct, Chicago police officials required Fiorito to use a dashboard camera in his cruiser. The videos obtained by the dash cam are now being used in the law suit and the criminal investigation. Fiorito is accused of targeting certain individuals and of lying under oath about the behavior and field sobriety test performance of the accused. The motivation for such conduct is said to be the time-and-a-half pay his receives as a result of spending a lot of time in court testifying on his DUI cases. Officer Fiorito is still on the job making DUI arrests.
Polk County, Florida Deputy Tex Thomas is being investigated for his handling of DUI cases. Thomas has admitted to taking shortcuts when preparing reports from arrests and prosecutors have dropped charges against 54 people as a result. Thomas was part of a DUI task force, but has since been reassigned pending the internal investigation.
Alexandra Torrensvilas was arrested in February on DUI charges after Office Joel Francisco slammed into the back of her car at a stop light. Several of Francisco's fellow officers came to the scene for assistance. After she was arrested, handcuffed, and placed in the back of the squad car, the officers discuss their plan to pin the responsibility of the accident on Torrensvilas. The discussion regarding lying on the police report was caught on the officer's squad camera.
Charges against Torrensvilas were dropped on Wednesday.
Boston, MA Police Commissioner Edward Davis has issued a new policy by which officers caught lying on the job will be fired from the force. This policy arrived on the heels of several high-profile cases in which officers lied, leading to civil suits and a damaged reputation of the Boston PD.
Certainly begs the question . . . what was the ‘policy' before?
