Safe driving points are awarded by the Departement of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for each calendar year of driving without a conviction for a moving violation and for completion of approved Driver Improvement Clinics. The DMV also assesses demerit points each time you are convicted of a moving violation. The courts do not award safe driving points or assess demerit points. You can learn your point balance by obtaining a copy of your driving record from the DMV. It is often advisable to complete a Driver Improvement Clinic to offset the assessment of demerit points.
