Bus Driver Charged with Reckless Driving in Virginia After Fatal Bus AccidentPosted on Jun 19, 2011
Kin Yiu Cheung, the 37-year-old bus driver, was taken into custody for reckless driving charges in Virginia; however, the charges were elevated soon after. Now the commercial bus driver faces four counts of involuntary manslaughter.
The investigators from the Virginia State Police Motor Carrier Safety Team ruled out mechanical errors or malfunctions, and believe the accident was caused by driver fatigue.
The bus was traveling northbound on Interstate 95 when it hit an embankment and overturned early Tuesday morning, landing on its roof. The accident occurred near Fredericksburg, VA.
The bus company, Sky Express Inc., is now prohibited from operating interstate transportation services. In fact, Sky Express has several counts of violating federal safety regulations for driver qualification requirements, hours of service, vehicle maintenance and other safety issues, and has received an out-of-service order from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Sky Express has been cited for many driving violations, eight of which were for speeding, since 2009.
The bus driver has been released from jail on bond.
