Driver of Tractor Trailer Charged With Reckless Driving on I-81Posted on Mar 03, 2011
George Patrick, the 46-year-old truck driver, did not notice that the traffic on the interstate had slowed down, which caused him to rear-end the Pontiac. A witness said she thought the truck was traveling around 70 mph when the crash happened. The driver of the Pontiac, 46-year-old Phyllis Hammer, was seriously injured and was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville for medical treatment.
Another witness said that the truck was traveling too fast for conditions, as the traffic probably slowed to about 15 mph.
During the accident, Patrick also sideswiped another semi truck and crashed into a minivan, sending it spinning, then hit the guardrail before coming to a rest. No one in the van was seriously injured. Both northbound lanes of I-81 were closed down for about four hours for cleanup.
Patrick was charged with reckless driving in Virginia.
We wish the driver of the Pontiac Grand Prix a full and complete recovery.
