On Thursday, January 13, 2011, the Virginia courts charged a Fredericksburg woman in a fatal car crash that took place on December 9, 2010. Police charged the driver for reckless driving in Virginia for improper brakes.

The deadly accident took place in Harrisonburg, Va. in the 500 block of East Market Street around 7:30 a.m. This Thursday morning crash took the life of one and injured others. Police say the accident was a single-vehicle crash caused by a drowsy driver.

Megan Lynn Farmer, the 25-year-old driver, fell asleep behind the wheel, according to the Harrisonburg Police Department. She was driving an American Red Cross Blood Services van when she crashed the van into a pole. Two other women were traveling with Farmer and were injured in the crash. Erin Vincent, 26, of Locust Grove, was critically injured and was transported by helicopter to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment; sadly, she died later from her injuries. The other passenger, as well as the driver, were injured and taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital for medical care and were later released.

The accident caused a traffic jam as Harrisonburg Electric worked on the power pole to stabilize it. The work crews had to shut down part of the lanes between Old Furnace Road and Reservoir Street. All lanes were reopened hours later.
