Trash Truck Driver Cited With Virginia Reckless Driving Charges

Posted on Feb 17, 2011
Around 5 a.m. Wednesday morning on February 9, 2011, a tractor-trailer accident occurred on Interstate 66. It appears that the truck was a trash truck that was traveling west on I-66 and tipped over, dumping garbage all over the roadway; however, the trash that spilled onto the interstate was not considered hazardous.

This early morning crash blocked westbound lanes of I-66 near the Beltway as well as the ramp to southbound I-495 for hours and made a mess of the commute, causing heavy congestion.

The 34-year-old trash truck driver Oscar R. Albarracin was injured and taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital for medical care. He was last listed with non life-threatening injuries, and his passenger was not injured.

Virginia State Police said the accident was caused by reckless driving and acknowledged that speed was a factor in this crash. They cited Albarracin with reckless driving charges in Virginia.

Two lanes of traffic were opened back up around 9 a.m. although clean-up was still underway. At 9:40 a.m., the three left lanes still remained closed on I-66 West at the Beltway. Westbound traffic was backed up to Falls Church, and eastbound traffic was under heavy congestion all the way back to Fairfax County Parkway.
