As of July 1, 2012, Virginia law now requires anyone convicted of Driving While Under the Influence (DUI / DWI) to have an ignition interlock device installed on their vehicle as a condition of any restricted driving privileges in Virginia.  Prior to that change in the law, the ignition interlock requirement had only applied to repeat offenders and those convicted of a first offense DUI / DWI with a breath or blood test result of 0.15 or higher.  Some believe that the punishment will be detrimental to those who have limited financial means and they will thus become a burden to society in other ways.  The device costs drivers about $80 / month, plus additional fees for monitoring the data.
